Last night Sony finally unveiled their new console. The Playstation 4 (not Orbis) was revealed along with new games from franchises like inFAMOUS and Killzone. More than anything else though, this conference showed that Sony has learned from their mistakes.
The most obvious thing is that every PS4 will be bundled with a headset and the headset can be easily plugged into the controller. While I enjoy bluetooth, many people don’t understand how to use them properly. This caused PS4 lobbies and chat rooms to be rather quiet and empty.
The next thing that shows that Sony understands what they need to do was talking about games. Many gaming journalist said that Sony needed to come out as the gamer’s console, and they did in the first few minutes of the conference. They quickly glanced over that streaming services, such as Netflix and Hulu, stating that they will still be available, but that was not the focus—games were; And boy did those games look good. We saw real-time gameplay from Killzone: ShadowFall and it looked amazing. Sony has kept a close relationship with Ubisoft which brought with it new Watch_Dogs gameplay. Surprisingly EA was absent from the conference despite Sony and EA having a close partnership. I speculated that Battlefield 4 would be revealed. Instead Sony brought out Blizzard, revealing Diablo 3 on PS3 and PS4. What’s more Activison, showed more Destiny and confirmed it as a title that will appear on the next-gen system. Another interesting note is that Playstation gamers will be getting exclusive content from Destiny. If Destiny becomes a huge franchise then this move will be genius on Sony’s part. Call of Duty is much more popular on XBox in part because of the exclusive DLC.
Another smart move was making the console developer friendly. There can’t be another ordeal on PS4 like there was with Skyrim, it was embarrassing for both Bethseda and Sony. In fact Sony addressed nearly every problem that people had with the PS3, the controller is larger, has better triggers and the analog sticks have also been changed.
If Sony’s E3 conference is as strong as this one then they will do great in the next-gen. Sony brought their A game and the ball is in Microsoft’s court now.
