In a recent GameInformer interview with Sony’s Worldwide Studios President, Shuhei Yoshida, the executive stated that they never considered an always online option for the upcoming PlayStation 4.

In an ever-changing industry that has been entrenched in hot debates, rumors, and scandals over always-on DRM, Yoshida calmly and confidently retorted that this was never an option.

When asked if an always-on connection was considered for the PS4, Shuhei Yoshia replied,

“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it. The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust internet connections. It makes sense for people to have internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet.”

He continued by emphasizing, “We didn’t even consider that.”
